When Is VAT Registration Mandatory?

VAT registration becomes mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 during the previous 12 months, or are expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days.

When Is VAT Registration Voluntary?

A business may register voluntarily when taxable supplies, imports, or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 during the previous 12 months, or are expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days.

Businesses Below AED 187,500

Businesses whose taxable supplies and expenses remain below AED 187,500 are generally not eligible for VAT registration. Incorrect registration may result in additional reviews, requests for supporting documents, or cancellation of registration.

VAT Registration Based on the Previous 12 Months or the Next 30 Days

The registration obligation may arise based on either actual taxable supplies during the previous 12 consecutive months or expected taxable supplies during the next 30 days.

Meeting either condition may require registration depending on the applicable threshold.

Late VAT Registration

Businesses that become required to register for VAT should submit their registration application within the period specified under UAE VAT legislation.

Failure to register on time may result in tax penalties and additional VAT liabilities relating to the period before registration.

Risks of Late VAT Registration

Late registration may create significant financial and tax consequences for a business.

  • Administrative penalties for late VAT registration.
  • VAT due for the period prior to registration.
  • Penalties related to late VAT return filing.
  • Penalties related to late payment of VAT.
  • Additional consequences depending on the circumstances of the case.

The financial impact may differ depending on whether the business voluntarily corrected its position or the issue was identified during a tax audit or review by the Federal Tax Authority.
